Phyto-remediation utilizes the action of specific trees and bushes to clean up contaminated soil, water and sediments. This technology ,which also acts as landscape compensation, is efficient for the remediation of contaminants such as : metals, pesticides, solvents, explosives, petroleum hydrocarbons and PAH’s. According to the characteristics of the contaminants and of the contaminated area, the most effective plant species are selected in order to:

• Optimize remediation time and costa
• Maximize production of bio-mass

Each area of intervention will receive the best-performing generation plant depending on local climate, through an approach of landscape integration and compensation

• Wind farms in windy areas
• Solar plants in southern regions with intense sunshine
• Biomass co-generation in areas where heat generation is also required, via combined-cycle power plants
• “Electric greenhouse” in farmlands

The first goal of the ReFIT project is to phyto-remediate contaminated areas producing renewable energy as a by-product. This way, thanks to innovative approaches, new resources for local development are generated, with particular attention to landscape identity.

Biomass installations are a kind of environmental mitigator, encouraging soil regeneration and at the same time allowing the immediate perception of an evolving landscape.
